Any modern major news source will have you believe that, as a people, we are more divided now than we’ve ever been. There’s almost no hope for us, if what they say is really true.
For every example that backs up the previous sentiment, there are many that challenge it. The outpouring of help and assistance from the surrounding Counties to those affected by Saturday’s flooding is one of those encouraging moments.
As Waverly residents try to regroup from Saturday’s nightmare, outside aid is pouring in from all around. Area churches, businesses, and individuals have donated clothing, bedding, food, pet food, hygienic items, and household items. A Facebook group dedicated to assisting Waverly flood victims was created within hours of the disaster. One individual from that group has even offered to give away an entire mobile home! Tide has also provided its mobile laundry service, Loads of Hope, to the people of Waverly.
Charities are popping up from everywhere – Schools, Local News Organizations, and the public. Bruceton Hollow Rock Central has started the “Tigers helping Tigers” fundraiser, named after the Sports teams of both High Schools. News Channel 5 has partnered with The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee to help raise emergency response funds.
The road to rebuild the town of Waverly, and the lives within it, is going to be a long one. Time will tell just how long it is going to take. But, through it all, one thing is certain: no Waverly resident is going to go without. We won’t let that happen.
Regardless of how we like to separate ourselves – or how the media like to separate us – we’re all part of the same community. Our children all play sports together, we all shop at the same stores, and we’re all connected by the same thoroughfares. Some of us might even pass each other at the same spot each morning during our daily commutes.
We’re all one community, and community is like family. The people of Waverly need our help right now. Let’s be the family they need.
